Activity 2: Town and country

A dusk street scene poster is provided which shows various pedestrians, some wearing high-visibility clothing and some not. Street lights are on also.

The second poster has a rural setting and shows a country road by a school at dusk with children walking along the road where there is no pavement. Again they are wearing a range of clothing to help children learn the 'bright is right' message.

The posters are designed to promote thinking and discussion. The following prompts may be helpful:

  • Who is dressed brightly?
  • Who is not dressed brightly?
  • What might help a driver to see you in the town? (Street lights, bright clothes.) What might make it difficult for them to see you? (If you are hidden from them by trees or parked cars or a post box or a bus at a bus stop while you're waiting to cross the road, dark clothes.)
  • What might help a driver to see you in the country? (Bright clothes.) What might make it difficult for a driver to see you in the country? (No street lights, winding road with no pavements, dark clothes.)

This discussion can be followed up by activity sheet 3, Make me bright, which provides an outline of Az, and outlines of an outfit that he could wear. Children could colour in Az and the clothes brightly, then cut them out and dress Az.

An alternative follow-up activity is for children to design a jacket for pedestrians which can easily be seen. This can be done through drawing, painting or collage.
