Activity 2: How traffic moves

  • Toy vehicles such as cars, lorries and buses

This activity involves playing a series of games with toys cars and other toy vehicles to help children learn how vehicles move and to develop their vocabulary.

  1. Give each child a toy vehicle, allowing the children a few minutes to explore it. Ask who has a car, who has a lorry and who has a bus, identifying each one.
  2. Let the children roll the toys along the floor. A simple ramp can be used to see whose car rolls the furthest. The children can find out who can roll their car nearest to the wall without reaching it. Develop vocabulary through this play: fast, slow, roll, wheels, forwards, backwards etc.
  3. Talk about the wheels how they allow the vehicles to roll.
