Taking children off the premises
It is essential for young children to learn about roads, traffic and safe behaviour at first hand, and a number of the activities in this resource involve taking children outdoors. A summary of the benefits of outdoor learning along with official guidance for the Early Years Foundation Stage can be found in the PDF document ‘Effective Practice: Outdoor Learning’ which can be downloaded from: http://nationalstrategies.standards.dcsf.gov.uk/node/84347 - new window.
Good planning, close supervision and risk assessment are all key parts of taking young children near traffic. Early Years Practitioners must ensure that school policies and local authority guidance is followed and that parental permission is given for all activities which take place outside the boundaries of the Early Years Setting. The recommended ratio of adults to children for outdoor activities will depend on several factors but near traffic it will need to be less than 1:8 and may need to be 1:2 so that all children can hold hands.
